This study also aims to increase awareness to the Oneida community as a whole about the signs of a stroke as well as modifiable risk factors that can cause a stroke. Research suggests Native American populations are at a higher risk for strokes, and those most at risk are the elders of the community. We aim to create a Stroke Awareness Team in partnership with the Oneida Comprehensive Health Division to offer more education on how to recognize a stroke and about making lifestyle modifications to reduce your risk for having a stroke and complications. Please see the Stroke Prevention tab for more information on how to recognize a stroke and save a life.
Stroke Risk Factors
Stroke is the number 5 cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of disability in the United States.1-3
The American Stroke Association is solely focused on reducing disability and death from stroke. We have many links to their educational material throughout this website. Risk factors for stroke are listed below and you can click on each risk factor to learn more about how to manage each risk factor from the American Stroke Association;
- High blood pressure
- Smoking
- History of Coronary artery disease
- History of Stoke and/or a transient ischemic attack (TIA)
- Diabetes
- High Cholesterol
- Physical inactivity
- Obesity
- Carotid artery disease (via atherosclerosis)
- Peripheral artery disease
- Atrial fibrillation (a heart rhythm abnormality)
- Sickle Cell Anemia
- COVID-19 – new research suggests COVID-19 is a risk factor for strokes.
Many of these risk factors are modifiable (meaning they can be changed) by changes in lifestyle and therefore reduce an individual’s risk for stroke.1-3 For information about modifiable risk factors from the American Stroke Association click here.
